Stay Active, Stay Aligned: Summer Wellness Tips from MOSAIC

Summer brings longer days and more time outdoors. Therefore, many people garden, travel, exercise and tackle home projects. But with this seasonal surge in activity can come an often-overlooked risk – back strain.

Owner of NC Spine & Sports, Dr. Alex Kallio specializes in chiropractic care and offers basic tips for staying healthy and avoiding injury in the North Carolina heat. NC Spine & Sports neighbors MOSAIC.

Health experts know that natural changes in muscle tone and joint flexibility as we age can increase the chance of injury. But maintaining simple habits can make a significant difference.

Here’s what Dr. Kallio recommends:

  • When lifting heavy items such as mulch bags or luggage, I recommend bending at the knees – not the waist – and keeping objects close to the body.
  • Hydration is key factor as dehydrated muscles are prone to cramping and injury. I routinely discuss the importance of drinking water throughout the day with my patients.
  • Footwear also plays a role. Flip-flops and unsupportive sandals can alter posture and strain the lower back over time. Supportive shoes are a better option for extended walking or standing.
  • Incorporating gentle stretching into your routine can help maintain flexibility. Yoga or short daily stretching sessions can counteract the strain from gardening, car rides or outdoor workouts.
  • Listening to your body is essential. Persistent stiffness or pain is a signal to rest or seek professional advice.

“By taking preventive steps, you can stay active and enjoy the summer months without compromising your spinal health,” says Dr. Kallio.

Dr, Kallio is partnering with 79°West Innovation Hub to host a Community Health Fair at MOSAIC on Friday, August 21, 3–7 p.m., offering free or reduced cost screenings. The event also includes The Blood Connection, the UNC Health Mammography Bus and the First Health Lung Bus.
