Foundations Family Therapy’s mission is straightforward: help people live full, abundant lives. Their talented team of therapists understands that it’s difficult to accomplish this when an individual contends with burnout.
Taylor Burgard, LCMHCA, joined Foundations Family Therapy earlier this year. She understands the differences between ordinary stress and burnout. “When exhaustion lingers, motivation fades and simple tasks feel overwhelming, you may be experiencing burnout rather than ordinary stress,” she says.
What is Burnout?
The APA Dictionary of Psychology defines burnout as “physical, emotional, or mental exhaustion, accompanied by decreased motivation, lowered performance, and negative attitudes toward oneself or others.” Recognizing the signs early can help you reset and restore balance.
Common signs of burnout include:

- Constant exhaustion, even following adequate rest
- Sense of detachment or disconnection from yourself
- Isolation and withdrawal from friends and family
- Low motivation and avoidance of necessary tasks
- Persistent negative or gloomy moods
- Physical symptoms, such as headaches and muscle tension
Once you recognize burnout, practical steps can help you reset and manage your schedule.
Strategies to Regain Balance
- Check in with yourself daily: Ask yourself how you feel and what you need. Practice self-compassion and respond appropriately to your mental and physical fatigue.
- Enforce healthy boundaries: Saying “no” protects your time and energy. Set limits on your availability to allow dedicated space for rest.
- Practice mindfulness: Taking a few slow, deep breaths or doing a quick body scan can help anchor you in the present moment amidst a busy schedule.
- Move your body: Gentle physical movement, such as a short walk or light stretching, helps release stress and reset your focus.
- Seek additional support: Lean on trusted family members, friends or mental health professionals. Sharing your experience ensures you do not have to handle burnout alone.
“Burnout isn’t a sign of weakness,” Burgard says. “It’s a signal to slow down and prioritize your well-being.”
