MOSAIC is reaping the rewards of thriving bee colonies, and two team members witnessed this abundance firsthand.
An end-of-summer honey bottling event yielded 100 lb. of honey and counting, a substantial increase from the 80 lb. produced in 2024. MOSAIC’s three branded beehives, easily seen from Hwy 15-501, complement the five additional hives and more than 225 species of bee-friendly trees, flowers and grasses at the Chatham Park Water Recovery Center. This pollinator utopia is part of a larger effort to combat bee population decline and help bees fulfill their important role in our local ecosystem.
MOSAIC’s honeybees were raised just south of Pittsboro at Rocky River Bee Farm by EAS Certified Master Beekeeper Jody Moore. With pesticides, habitat loss, parasites and changing weather patterns threatening bee populations, Moore works to nurture hardy bee colonies and prepare them to be successfully relocated throughout Central NC.
As a keystone species, the health of bee populations supports the survival of many plant varieties and the food security of wildlife and humans. A rise in the prevalence of Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), or the sudden demise of honeybee colonies, has made it more important than ever to create welcoming habitats for pollinators.
The bees of the MOSAIC beehives and the Chatham Park pollinator garden have proven to be some of Chatham Park’s most valuable residents, providing not only delicious honey and community enrichment but critical ecological diversity.
