79°West: Mental Health Matters
October 30 @ 8:00 am - 9:00 am

Self-criticism often begins as an attempt to improve or motivate ourselves—but excessive criticism usually increases shame and anxiety.
Why can one mistake, awkward moment, or unfinished task lead to hours of harsh self-judgment? Why do we sometimes believe that criticizing ourselves will make us more motivated, responsible, or successful?
In this Mental Health Matters talk, therapist Danny Eller, LCSW explores the psychology of self-criticism and the beliefs that cause us to judge ourselves so harshly. Participants will learn the difference between constructive self-evaluation and destructive self-criticism, why perfectionism, anxiety, and fear of failure can strengthen the inner critic, and how persistent self-judgment can affect motivation, confidence, and emotional well-being.
This practical and accessible conversation will help attendees recognize patterns of harsh self-talk, understand why self-criticism often creates shame rather than meaningful change, and begin developing healthier ways to acknowledge mistakes, take responsibility, and pursue personal growth without attacking their worth as a person.
